NEWS // WRC TO USE F1 POINT SYSTEM FOR 2010

The new WRC point system works like this: the top ten drivers of each rally will be awarded points using the 25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1 method that F1 has switched to for 2010. The system wil also be used for each class within the WRC, i.e. Junior, Production and S2000.

The change to Formula One’s point system came after concerns that there was little incentive for teams to achieve a race win, with but a two-point difference between first and second place finishers.

Others voiced concern after the 2008 World Rally Championship, when Sebastien Loeb, who won 11 WRC rounds that year, was unable to clinch the title until the penultimate round, as Mikko Hirvonen remained in contention for the title although he had not collected as many stage wins.

Today’s announcement marks the WRC’s return to a top-ten scoring system, one they have not used since 1997, when the championship adopted F1’s top six method.
