RACE REPORT // GT1 & GT3 @ SILVERSTONE

Sumo GT Nissan inherited round two of the FIA GT1 World Championship at Silverstone. The driving team of Jamie Campbell-Walter and Warren Hughes took the victory thanks to penalties to the two Aston Martins ahead on the podium... [read more]

Hexis Racing, with drivers Fred Makowiecki and Thomas Accary, were second at the flag but were given a 15 second penalty for taking a drive through too late.

That dropped them to third but both they and Sumo (third on the road) were promoted when Tomas Enge and Darren Turner, for Young Driver AMR, were disqualified for an illegal underfloor.

RACE REPORT // EIGHT HOURS OF LE CASTELLET

Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello won the inaugural Eight Hours of Le Castellet to mark a comfortable debut victory for the Audi R15+. The updated German car was at the event in part as a test, and throughout the weekend it seemed an impressive vehicle, though the handling was said to still be an issue. Aston Martin Racing were second, Adrian Fernandez sharing with Stefan Mücke and Harold Primat, with the previously Aston engined Lola of Rebellion Racing third. Jean-Christophe Boullion was impressive again, as he shared with Guy Smith (also very impressive) and Andrea Bellichi for the Swiss team... [read more]

Oreca had a day to forget, their Peugeot suffering hydraulic trouble early on and losing half an hour. The team would recover to finish fourth with second best lap, the position coming at the expense of the French team’s own chassis. The AIM powered car had a handful of late problems that ultimately restricted it to fifth overall.

Strakka Racing can be proud of a job well done, storming back after losing time early on to win LMP2 and finish sixth overall. Danny Watts drove the wheels off their new Honda Performance Development chassis and overhauled Richard Hein’s OAK Pescarolo after the French gentleman driver took over from team mate Guillaume Moreau. Moreau had turned on the style to drive from the back of the grid to the class lead, in a car undoubtedly slower than that of Strakka and was unlucky not to win. Third were RML, their HPD engined Lola coming good at the end on a slightly different strategy, driving more efficiently to save fuel and cut through at the final stops- with a bit of help from magical Tommy Erdos, who helped earn Mike Newton and Andy Wallace a spot on the podium with him. 2009 champions Quifel ASM, with Miguel Amaral, Olivier Pla and Warren Hughes were let down by mechanical problems, a curse of their Zytek chassis they thought had been eradicated.

In LMPC, a late change of lead saw Applewood Seven (answers on a postcard about that name) sweep past to win ahead of Hope Polevision Racing. Damien Toulemonde, Ross Zampatti and David Zollinger (the late hero) earned the win from Mathias Beche (the unfortunate half of the late pass), Vincent Capillaire and Christophe Pillon. DAMS were third, the famous French outfit’s Oreca chassis crewed by Andrea Balesi, Gary Chalandon and Alessandro Cicognani.

GT1 was, as lamented by Radio Le Mans’ John Hindaugh, “An entry, not a class.” The Larbre Saleen, driven by ex FIA GT champion Gabrielle Gardel, alongside Julien Canal and Patrice Goueslard, had a catalogue of problems and ended 24th overall and deep in GT2.

The second GT tier belonged to Porsche, with the main Ferrari challenge wilting with various problems, the sole Aston suffering fuel pump maladies and Spyker suffering at the hands of several poorly driven prototypes. Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz romped home two laps clear of team mates Patrick Long, Christian Ried and Martin Ragginger. Celebrity AF Corse Ferrari entry, number 95, was third in the hands of Jean Alesi, Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander. The Finn had commented upon the determination of his ex F1 team mates, saying he was surprised by their drive to excel in the GT class.

The next round is at Spa, where the 1000kms will see six works diesels go head to head in the historic Ardennes circuit.

EVENT // LE MANS SERIES TESTING @ PAUL RICARD

The Le Mans Series official opening test of 2010 was at Paul Ricard HTTT. The conditions weren’t amazing, leading to a lack of obvious trends. Fastest of the weekend were Oreca, with their 01 prototype handled by Briton Andy Meyrick and Frenchmen Soheil Ayari and Didier Andre... [read more]

The petrol car outwitted its new diesel Peugeot team-mate, in the hands of Le Mans driving team Oliver Panis, Nicolas Lappiere and Loic Duval. The ’08 spec car was solid if not spectacular, sitting around the top six all weekend. Expect consistent improvement during the first weekend of the ‘actual’ season- the diesel power will feature.

Second and third were Rebellion Racing, whose new gold Lolas (running Judd rather than Aston Martin power for 2010) outpaced their old engine mates. The works Aston Lola was at war all weekend with Signature Plus’s similar example, eventually ending in sixth, with Signature fourth. The works car lacked outright pace despite an experienced crew- Adrian Fernandez, Harold Primat and Stefan Mücke all traveled with the squad, ranged against Pierre Ragues and Frank Mailleaux. Interestingly, the Signature Squad’s Dunlop tyres seemed to have an advantage over the works squad’s Michelins.

In ‘I used to be a Formula One World Champion’ Town, Alain Prost watched son Nicolas on board Rebellion, Mario Andretti watched son Marco on board…Rebellion and Nigel Mansell trundled around with his sons on board a Zytek. A learning curve of some proportion awaits Beechdean Mansell in 2010.

Zytek topped LMP2, though, with Olivier Pla ending top for Quifel. Second were Strakka, whose new Acura (sorry, HPD) seems to be bedding in well (and quickly) in the hands of Danny Watts. They outpaced newly HPD powered RML, who nevertheless will be confident that the new engine is considerably more reliable than the turbocharged AER hand grenade of previous years. Those three were the top three in LMP2, ahead of two Racing Box Lola Judds and two Oak Pescarolos.

FLMC is something that’s hard to judge right now- a host of inexperienced drivers were getting their hands in, so we wait until the first round to make any judgement.

In GT1, it was close fought all weekend. Aston Martin’s Young Driver team, with Enge and Nygaard, clashed with three Fords- two for Marc VDS (Kuppens, Paltalla, Leinders, Martin and de Doncker) and one for Matech (Mutsch, Gachnang, Alleman, Frey). Matech finished top, but the glory was pretty split over the weekend. Larbre’s stalwart Saleen appears to need a little tweaking, but expect it to be on the pace come round one.

In GT2, it was a crazy weekend. Richard Westbrook took fastest time in the end, but he wasn’t far ahead of AF Corse’s Gianmaria Bruni. The Briton has switched series with Prospeed after the cancellation of FIA GT2, which left JMW briefly in a hole- but the Aston team have hired Darren Turner in his place. The British, Dunlop sponsored squad spent a lot of time near the top of the time sheets, and are now looking very good for the season. AF Corse’s celebrity car (Alesi, Fisichella, Vilander) was reasonably quick, but it looks like Bruni will be breaking a few F1 focused hearts this season. Also switching with AF Corse and Prospeed are CRS, who on this evidence could shine in 2010.

It’s all set up quite nicely… look out for a full preview in the week.

NEWS // SRO CANCELS 2010 FIA GT2 CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2010 FIA GT2 European Championship has been canned by organisers SRO, after weeks of speculation surrounding poor entry numbers and competition from other series. With GT Open, the Le Mans Series GT2 class and SRO’s GT3 all taking entries away from the series, it was a task that could not be completed to bring together a full field. Though the FIA GT Championship had a thriving GT2 class in 2009, it seems that the splitting of the classes has harmed the production based GT field. The good news is that we may now see GT1 cars in the field for the Spa 24 Hours... [read more]

The full statement reads:

"After the successful launch in Paris last week of the FIA GT1 World Championship, which has a full grid of 12 teams and 24 cars, and the continuing strong support for the FIA GT3 European Championship, with 40 cars expected to be on the grid at Silverstone for the first race in May, SRO has proposed to the FIA to postpone the FIA GT2 European Championship for 2010.

"The thundering development of the GT3 category, with 13 models from 12 brands homologated to date and the likely arrival of three additional ones in 2012, offering cars more affordable with performances equal to those of the GT2 category, has forced SRO to redefine its plans for the GT2 category.

"A proposition has been made to FIA, which will be heard by the FIA World Motor Sport Council on Thursday 11 March, to postpone the introduction of the GT2 European Championship, to be re-launched once the future orientation of the GT2 class has been agreed with a minimum of four manufacturers, possibly around the introduction of Hybrid technologies in GT racing.

"In the meantime, SRO has proposed to the Royal Automobile Club of Belgium (RACB), promoters of the 24 Hours of Spa, to concentrate its GT2 effort on the blue ribbon event with a FIA GT2 European Cup to be awarded to the best placed GT2 car at the event. The similar performances of the GT2 and GT3 categories promise an epic competition between many different brands.

"SRO has a long and successful history of revitalising championships and we are now working hard with everyone involved to re-launch GT2 as a full championship as soon as possible."

ENDURANCE BRIEFS // ALMS & LMS PRE-SEASON

Welcome to the first ever ColdTrackDays endurance round up. The major event this week was, of course, the Sebring Wheels Down Winter Test. Catchy name for a fairly run of the mill event, with only one of the main LMP1 and only three LMP2 entries in attendance.

Aston Martin’s P1, reliveried in Adrian Fernandez’s Lowe’s sponsorship (gaudily over the Gulf paint), was the fastest car of the weekend, edging out the fastest LMP2, Acura’s David Brabham. The Australian driver, fresh from a season winning the Le Mans 24 Hours and the ALMS, was mighty impressive in the Highcroft ARX-01B and spent most of the weekend in second overall- only dropping behind Intersport’s LMP1 Lola on the final day. Also on the last day, Aston Martin suffered a fair sized accident, with Harold Primat taken to hospital but given the all clear... [read more]

With both LMP1 and LMP2 set to be handled in one class in the IMSA run series in 2010, we wait to see what points and penalties will be handed out to balance the cars to create a level playing field for the season.

LMPC had it’s worldwide first appearance, and the fastest car was the Genoa Racing car, with ex Le Mans winner Andy Wallace amongst its driving squad.

In GT2, the ‘new’ widebody 430 Ferrari of Risi was fastest all weekend, on the final day eclipsing Wolf Henzler’s Falken Porsche. GT Challenge was headed by Kelly Moss Racing’s 92 car, with Darrell Carlisle onboard.

Of course, come raceday Peugeot’s rampant lions will be tearing up the bumpy ribbon of grey, so expect the picture to be rather different come March 20th.

In other news, RML put their new HPD (Acura if you’re stateside, Honda Performance Development to Europeans) powered Lola on track for its first shakedown this week, in preparation for their Le Mans Series campaign. Battling snow and ice on the first day, Thomas Erdos managed a handful of installation laps before both he and team owner (and second driver) Mike Newton managed to get some proper running done on the second day (Wednesday). The reaction was positive from all involved, despite it being the first ever run of the engine in a coupe, and, of course, the adverse weather.

“My first impressions are extremely favourable,” raved Brazilian Erdos. “Both the engine and the gearbox work so smoothly, and the gear changes are virtually seamless. The overall driveability is impressive as a result. I’m really very encouraged, and I just love that V8 sound!”

Newton also had positive vibes to share. ““The power delivery is so smooth, and the gearbox allows you to shift up or down at almost any time. It’s very accommodating. We also appear to have picked up much better chassis rigidity, which comes as an unexpected but very welcome bonus!”

With Andy Wallace set to drive at Paul Ricard and Le Mans, it’s set to be a good season for the British favourites.
Other Le Mans Series news comes courtesy of ASM, who this week announced the arrival of quick Brit Warren Hughes to partner regular drivers Miguel Amaral and 2009’s hottest star Olivier Pla at Le Mans and the season opening Paul Ricard enduro.

Finally, and a little belatedly, we bring the news that FIA GT2 champion Richard Westbrook has signed to drive JMW Motorsport’s Aston Martin Vantage for the season, partnering Rob Bell. This entry is a huge British favourite, and will only be more so with a British car, two British drivers and tyres from Dunlop- the British rubber specialists.

The Le Mans Series Paul Ricard test begins this week- March 7th and 8th.

In GT land, testing has begun for the FIA GT1 World Championship. More news will follow on from this in the near future, so stay tuned, but the championship has a new website, which is the place to go for the latest news and photos.

NEWS // PEUGEOT REVEALS PLANS FOR 2010

Peugeot Sport have revealed their 2010 plans, as well as the new livery for the 908 HDi FAP- the reigning Le Mans 24 Hours winner. The French marque is hoping that the team can reflect their ‘new corporate identity, which puts movement and motoring enjoyment at the heart of its strategy... [read more]

Peugeot Sport is targeting another win in the French enduro, with the team ‘striving to squeeze even more improvements out of the car’ in what will be its fourth and final year. 2009 winners Marc Gene and Alex Wurz will be joined by ex Formula One (and Aston Martin, and Nissan) driver Anthony Davidson, in car number 1. The Britain will be hoping to expand his burgeoning sportscar reputation with a step into the world’s top sports prototype. Anthony has already tested (at the end of 2008) and will be testing again before the race.

In car number 2, multiple pole sitter and ex WRC star Stephane Sarrazin is joined by fellow Frenchmen Nicolas Minassian and Franck Montagny- a speedy line up indeed, and one sure to bolster their chances. Sportscar superstar Pedro Lamy of Portugal will be joined by French hero Sebastien Bourdais and ALMS star Simon Pagenaud, who drove the car at Spa (for the works team) and Le Mans (in the ill fated Pescarolo entry) last season. That car will be numbered 3.

The line up is completed by reserve driver, Austrian Christian Klien and test driver Gregory Guilvert, who won the Peugeot Spider cup in 2009.

Peugeot’s first race of the season will be the Sebring 12 hours, where two cars, numbers 7 and 8, will be entered. 7 will crewed by Gene, Wurz and Davidson, while 8 will see Bourdais teamed with his Le Mans team Lamy and Pagenaud. A handful of test sessions will follow, before the whole team enters the Spa Francorchamps round of the Le Mans Series. After Le Mans, the French team will also race at Silverstone and, pending ACO confirmation, at Shanghai in China. These final two rounds also make up rounds of the Intercontinental Le Mans Challenge.

Great news for 2011 also followed in the official announcement, with the team confirming it is to begin work on a car for the new Le Mans rules for next year.

Remember as well, that ORECA will be running a 908 in the Le Mans Series and at Le Mans, alongside their ORECA 01 AIM.

2009 YEAR IN REVIEW // JAKE YORATH (PART ONE)

What a year it's been.  And what an up and down.  Without going into too much detail, I've started my own magazine and ended my education career abruptly.  In the meantime, I've had (photographically at least) one of the best years of my life.

My first event of the year was the rather static Autosport International Show- really no substitute for a racetrack!  But it's a way to start the year, I guess... [read more]

Opening the on track season was the British GT Media day at Silverstone- a nice relaxed start. Greeted by flat grey skies, I was quite pleased with the results.

After that, I visited Castle Combe for the first time ever. I tell you what, that feels like years ago. If you're British, I really recommend a visit. The views are excellent, and the track hugely friendly.

The season started 'properly', as it often does, with the opening round of the FIA GT Championship at Silverstone.  Some great racing, and excitement with the first outing, in anger at least, for the 2010 GT1 class.  Matech's Ford GT had the definite measure of the much lauded Nismo GTR, as it would continue to have for most of the season.  GT3 also provided great racing over the weekend, a taster for what would be a stunning season in all the FIA GT classes.

After that, the hottest day I've had at a racetrack came at, of all places, the bloody awful concrete expanse that is Rockingham.  No offence to owners or fans, but this circuit is a hateful, hateful place in my opinion- so little of the track is available to get to.  Having sweltered for a day, the end result were a few very sun drenched shots, and my favourite abstract of the year- the black and white of a grid girl from above.

Just two weeks later, and I packed my bags for my first ever (I know, shock horror, right?) Le Mans 24 Hours.  Not quite as magical as the Spa 24 for me, but still enjoyable- but a bit too crowded!  Having checked my options, I decided to buy tickets for my first visit.  Perhaps I'll visit as a media representative next year.  I didn't bring my camera kit- I relied on stealing my father's every now and again.

Let's start with that- and we'll open part two with the wtcc...

RACE REPORT // LE MANS SERIES FINALE @ SILVERSTONE

Oreca Matmut AIM scored their first ever Le Mans Series victory (in their own chassis, at least) at the Silverstone 1000kms. Nicolas Lappiere and Olivier Panis won despite being outdragged to the first corner from pole position. They also overcame a strong challenge first from Pescarolo, who were delayed by gearbox trouble and Speedy Racing, and were robbed at the death by the need to change a louvre panel on the front left. However, a third place was enough for Aston Martin to seal their Le Mans Series title on their first attempt... [read more]

In LMP2, the dominant Quiffel Zytek suffered electrical gremlins and retired early, allowing Speedy Racing's Lola to take victory for Leuenberger, Pompidou and Kane.

GT1 victory belonged to Gigawave Aston Martin, Peter Kox and Ryan Sharp enjoying an early battle with Larbre's Laurent Groppi.  Groppi's team mates unfortunately did not have his pace.

GT2 was a bittersweet affair for JMW Motorsport, who needed a win to take the series, but also needed 77 Felbermayr Porsche to not score.  The 77 car had serious issues, but still managed a 7th place in class to secure the title as JMW's Bruni and Bell won the race.

Nicolas Lappiere celebrates the first Le Mans Series victory for his Oreca Matmut AIM team.

A third place finish was all that Aston Martin needed to clinch the LMP1 title. This was their first attempt at the Le Mans Series, one that proved rather successful.

In LMP2, Zytek's Olivier Pla will start from pole having dominated the class all weekend.

GT1 pole belongs to Laurent Groppi's Larbre Saleen, who edged out the clear favourite- Peter Kox for Gigawave Aston Martin.
