Audi aims to continue its string of victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours with a completely new LMP1 sports car development. Since its debut in 1999, the brand with the Four Rings has won the world’s most important endurance race as many as nine times with the R8, R10 TDI and R15 TDI models. In doing so, Audi has equaled this feat in the race’s roll of honor with Ferrari. With the new R18, which was presented at the Audi Sportpark in Ingolstadt on Friday, Audi is aiming for its tenth Le Mans success in 2011... [read more]
For the first time since 1999, Audi will contest Le Mans with a closed coupe again. "In the future, aerodynamic efficiency will be even more important at Le Mans than it was in the past," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "A closed car has clear advantages in this respect. Our computer simulations have been confirmed in the wind tunnel and during initial track tests."
Significantly smaller engines than those used before will be prescribed at Le Mans in 2011 as the rule makers aim to achieve a substantial reduction of engine power. By opting for a 3.7-liter V6 TDI unit, Audi retains the diesel concept that saw its first victorious fielding in 2006. "From our point of view, the TDI continues to be the most efficient technology," says Ulrich Baretzky, Head of Engine Development at Audi Sport. "There are good reasons why the share of TDI units among Audi’s production models is as high as it is."
Through the innovative V6 TDI engine for the Le Mans 24 Hours, motorsport is yet again performing pioneering work for the production arm at Audi where there is a growing trend towards smaller, more economical but yet powerful engines.
Another new development is the six-speed transmission in the R18 which has been specifically modified for use with the smaller engine.
With regard to the chassis Audi Sport wants to live up to its promise, expressed in the brand’s "Vorsprung durch Technik" tagline. Unlike those of the closed Le Mans prototypes, the carbon fiber monocoque of the R18 does not consist of two halves but features a single-component design. This saves weight and increases stiffness.
For the development of the closed R18, engineers at Audi Sport were able to draw on the experiences gained in 1999 with the R8C and in 2003 with the LMP1 of the corporate "sister brand" Bentley that was victorious at Le Mans. "Also the Audi A4 DTM, which for example, features a heated windshield, allowed us to shorten the development cycle with respect to the ventilation of the cockpit, the doors and the heating of the windshield," explains Dr. Martin Mühlmeier, Head of Engineering at Audi Sport.
The chassis and aerodynamics package contains a lot of know-how from the R8, the R10 TDI and the R15 TDI whereas the fitting of identically sized front and rear wheels is new to an Audi Le Mans sports car. This configuration allows a more balanced weight distribution.
The R18’s headlights, which are the first to completely consist of LEDs with optimized amount of light, are a technical highlight. The new generation of headlights was developed in close cooperation between Audi Sport and the Technical Development (TE) division of AUDI AG and by using at Le Mans, will be prepared for future use in production vehicles. Audi’s light designers had the chance to make their mark on the development as well: The LEDs of the daytime light form the shape of a "1" which is intended to inspire associations with Audi’s historic brand logo.
The Audi R18 has been designed for progressive electrification, which Audi Sport is planning to drive forward step by step. "But efficiency is always the crucial factor for us," says Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "No matter which form of energy recovery we may choose the key aspect for Audi - in motorsport as well as on the production side of the house - is that it provides a true advantage."
The development of the new Audi R18 started in mid 2009. The V6 TDI engine has been running on the dynamometers since the summer of 2010. The R18, with Allan McNish at the wheel, completed its first test on a racetrack at the end of November.
The racing debut of the Audi R18 is planned for the Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium) 6 Hours on May 8. Prior to the event, the new prototype will be able to do its first laps on the race track at Le Mans during the official test day on April 24 and gather important data for the race on June 11 and 12.
Audi is planning to field three Audi R18 cars at Le Mans, which will be entered by Audi Sport Team Joest, the most successful Le Mans team of all time. In addition, Audi Sport Team Joest will contest the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC), consisting of a total of seven endurance races on three continents (including the Le Mans 24 Hours) with two cars. At the opening race at Sebring on March 19, the team will use two "R15 plus plus" cars. "Sending the R18 into a race at such an early point in time would be difficult in terms of logistics and interfere with our development program," explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.

EYE CANDY // INSIDE THE AUDI R15 TDI
A lot of us work in office buildings, seated at desks or workstations. Some of us might even be relegated to cubicles. But there are those who spend their days here, at the wheel of a racing car. I happen to know a few of these guys (#TedAnthonyJr. #JoeyAtterbury). Their days are spent at the helm of rally cars, race cars and driving simulators. They work long hours, coaching at driving schools, preparing for the next race weekend. But can we really call that work? I suppose anything can get old. The love can get lost at some point, right? But for those of us riding desks and not dirt bikes Monday through Friday, we day dream of having an office like the one featured above... Do us proud gentlemen. We're all a little jealous // [comment]

NEWS // PEUGEOT UNVEILS 90X LE MANS PROTOTYPE
Peugeot Sport has just unveiled their latest Le Mans Prototype, what they are calling the 90X. Designed to meet the 2011 regulations put into place by the ACO, the 90X has been undergoing testing at undisclosed tracks in Europe. And while Peugeot has released limited information on the car's development, rumor has it the 90X will incorporate a more comprehensive hybrid drivetrain than the KERS regenerative braking system being used in the current 908 HDi FAP, as well as a 'shark fin' similar to those used in Formula One.

PEUGEOT 90X BREAKS COVER
In parallel with its 2010 Peugeot 908 HDi FAP race programme, Peugeot Sport is busy designing and developing a new prototype that will defend its colours in 2011.
Peugeot Sport's principal mission accomplished
Having been kept secret in Peugeot Sport's factory in Vélizy, near Paris, the team's new endurance challenger – known under the codename 90X – has been out for its first track test. "Our objective was to start track testing before the end of the year," says Peugeot Sport Director Olivier Quesnel. "I am pleased to report that we have now done that. Even so, there is still a long way to go and a considerable amount of work to be done as we prepare for 2011."
The 90X's technical characteristics
The 90X complies with the new ACO's 2011 regulations, and notably incorporates the extra "shark fin" bodywork on the engine cover. This new feature is designed to help prevent the car from becoming airborne in the case of a high-speed spin. As with the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP, Peugeot Sport has opted for a closed cockpit design, which still meets the mandatory 900kg weight requirement. "We are still exploring several options with regard to the engine and technology we will use," points out Bruno Famin, the Technical Director of Peugeot Sport. "Work on the engine's development is ongoing. Endurance racing is an ideal proving ground to provide us with the opportunity to showcase all the brand's technologies."

LE MANS SERIES // PEUGEOT WINS 1000KM OF SILVERSTONE
This year at the AUTOSPORT 1000km of Silverstone saw the finale of the 2010 Le Mans Series and the beginning of the newly formed Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, with endurance kings Audi and Peugeot signing up to a full season consisting of three races starting at Silverstone before the teams move on to round two at Petit Le Mans next month... [read more]
What was a perfect day of qualifying for Audi on Saturday with McNish sitting on pole was followed by a disappointing start to their race day. A dramatic beginning to the race saw Alan McNish battle with Anthony Davidson within the early stages of the 1000km race until the Scot succumbed to a mechanical failure after only half an hour of racing. It was not all a lost cause for Audi however, as Timo Bernhard and Rinaldo Capello were able to finish with a podium in third place.
With the Audi #7 car out so early in the game, it was an all Peugeot show as Anthony Davidson and Nicolas Minassian kept their aptly numbered #1 car in the front to take their first P1 class win of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, facing very little competition in the form of Nicolas Lapierre and Stephane Sarrazin’s ORECA Peugeot 908 who took second place.
Diesel runners aside, Aston Martin and their #009 car were able to lead the way on the petrol powered front and finished in front of the Lola coupes of Rebellion Racing.
Misfortunes for pole sitters came in twos as Strakka Racing HPD were expected to breeze to an easy win after a stunning performance during the Saturday qualifying session for the P2 class. However a collision with the Spyker from the GT2 class meant they lost out their lead whilst recovering in the pits. A gruelling fight to the finish with the Quifel ASM team eventually saw Strakka come through and regain the top spot to take the well deserved win in P2.
The GT1 class didn’t see much drama as the Sabre Saleen was the only GT1 competitor of this race. They were able to finish and ‘win’ in the GT1 class with Gabriele Gardel, Patrice Gouselard and Fernando Rees at the wheel.
In GT2 it was a much different story. Pole sitters JMW Motorsport in their Aston Martin V8 Vantage were unable to convert their leading position into a win and lost out to AF Corse Ferrari through their pit stops, with Jaime Melo and Gimmi Bruni taking the victory in GT2. A stop-go penalty for JMW within the last stages of the race meant the Prospeed Porsche snapped up second place, relegating JMW to third.
Last but not least, Jody Firth and Warren Hughes were able to take a win in the Formula Le Mans class, picking up points for DAMS as they fought off Hope Polevision Racing who finished second and third.
And that concludes the 2010 Le Mans Series, but it’s only getting started for the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. Round 2 will take place at Road Atlanta as part of Petit Le Mans on October 2 with the final third round taking place in Zhuhai China on November 7.

NEWS // ASTON MARTIN LMP1 PROTOTYPE UNVEILED
Thanks to the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), the LMP1 class of the Le Mans Series will see a handful of changes before the start of the 2011 season. Hoping to level the playing field between gasoline and diesel powered prototypes, the new rules have prompted Aston Martin to develop an LMP1 car for the 2011 season. What appears to be an open cockpit, monococque single-seater, Aston's new LMP1 entry will be the first race car developed entirely in-house in fifty years.

ASTON MARTIN TARGETS LE MANS WITH NEW RACE CAR
Silverstone, 11 September 2010. Aston Martin will return to the legendary Le Mans 24 Hour race in 2011 with a new LMP1 race car designed to compete for top honours.
The new Gulf Oil liveried car is being designed from the ground up with an Aston Martin open cockpit monocoque chassis and a new purpose-designed race engine.
Under the new Automobile Club De L'Ouest (ACO) technical regulations for 2011, Aston Martin now believes it has the opportunity to compete for top honours at the 24 Hour race against tough competition including the diesel-engined competitors. As with all Aston Martins, the new LMP1 will be petrol-powered and designed to make the best use of the ACO's stringent regulations.
Aston Martin Chairman, David Richards said: "Having won the GT category twice at Le Mans in 2007 and 2008 and the Le Mans Series outright in 2009, we still want to achieve our ultimate goal of winning the 24 Hour race overall to bring the title back to Britain.
"In recent years, it has been impossible for petrol cars to compete on equal terms with the diesels. However, we now have assurances from the ACO that, with the adoption of the 2011 regulations, they will properly balance the performance of these new cars. Under these circumstances we have been prepared to develop Aston Martin's first purpose-built racing chassis and engine for more than 50 years.
"Even with this new car, it will still be a 'David and Goliath' fight against the massive resources of our competitors, but we have become accustomed to this and relish the challenge."
Work on the new chassis and engine has been progressing for several months at Aston Martin Racing's headquarters in Banbury, UK and the first of a limited number of six cars will run in early 2011.
Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin said: "Racing is a fundamental part of Aston Martin's heritage and Le Mans is the race that every true sports car maker aspires to win. While every aspect of this new LMP1 car has been built purely for racing, we also remain committed to developing race-winning GT cars based on our road cars. We are the only manufacturer to offer a race car for every category from GT1 to GT4."
Aston Martin's first and only outright victory at Le Mans was in 1959 with the DBR1 of Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby. Aston Martin Racing has been at the pinnacle of endurance racing since it was founded in 2004 with multiple factory and customer wins across the globe including two GT1 class victories at Le Mans in 2007 and 2008, and an overall Le Mans series win in 2009.

NEWS // ASTON MARTIN TO SELL LMP1 PROTOTYPES?
According to Autosport, Aston Martin Racing will build six of their next LMP1 prototypes for privateers and collectors. This would be the first time since 1989 that Aston Martin made their prototypes available to the public. However, the plans for a bespoke AMR prototype hinge on whether the British automaker even intends to build a new LMP1 entry at all... [read more]
Last week, David Richards, chairman of Prodrive and Aston Martin Racing, said that a new Aston Martin LMP1 would be built if AMR could be certain their gasoline powered V12 would be competitive with the turocharged diesel powerplants used by Audi and Peugeot. And while nothing is certain just yet, the Jota Sport team did finalize a multiyear deal with Aston Martin in early April, and, assuming the team intends to race prototypes, it would make sense that AMR supply them. ALMS @ LONG BEACH // QUALIFYING RESULTS
Following a very close battle with Highcroft HPD's Simon Pagenaud, Adrian Fernandez put Aston Martin on pole position for round two of the American Le Mans Series in Long Beach. In the first event for the newly combined LMP class, the LMP1 Aston Martin and LMP2 HPD seemed evenly matched. Fernandez set the early pace, but was then bested by Pagenaud shortly before the session was stopped in order to clear debris from the track. When the session resumed, Fernandez reclaimed P1 with a 1:13.213 lap time, while Pagenaud was forced to settle for second after lapping some 0.072 seconds slower than Fernandez. Rounding out the top three was the Lola-Mazda of Dyson and Smith, who ended the session 1.046 seconds behind the HPD entry of Pagenaud and Brabham.

NEWS // KRISTENSEN LE MANS COUNTDOWN (PART 4)
Eight time Le Mans champion, Tom Kristensen, who is preparing for his return to the Circuit de la Sarthe, just sent out this, his fourth report following testing here in the United States. According to Kristensen's report, after testing the Audi R15 TDI, he received a call from FIA President Jean Todt expecting asking him to support the stewards during this weekends Australian Grand Prix... [read more]
"Hello everybody! When you read these lines, I’ll be down under in Australia. While we were testing the Audi R15 TDI in the United States I received a message that FIA President Jean Todt was expecting me to call him back. He invited me to support the stewards at the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Australia. After discussing the invitation with Dr. Ullrich I spontaneously accepted. I’ve always supported the idea of the stewards being assisted by an experienced and neutral race driver because a driver’s experience simply puts him in a much better position to judge certain situations.
So I was very happy about Jean Todt’s invitation. I feel honored that I’ve been asked to assume this great responsibility and it shows me what kind of prestige the Le Mans 24 Hours have.
After the tests last week in Florida I stopped at Sebring. I arrived at the circuit exactly when the national anthem was being played and the cars were lining up on the grid. Especially after our victory last year with Allan and Dindo it was a really funny feeling not to be contesting the race myself and not to see any Audis on the starting grid either.
Still, it was nice to be there and to soak up the great atmosphere that always exists at Sebring. The large crowd saw an exciting race in the first few hours, particularly in the GT2 class.
Peugeot put on a good show at Sebring. Of course they didn’t have any really serious rivals in this race and were never under any really heavy pressure, but the cars were fast and ran like clockwork. This again confirms my opinion that Le Mans 2010 will be very tough.
With the R15 plus, we’ve definitely made a step forward. During the first tests, however, we found that there is still a lot of work to do for us. At Le Mans we need a car that is fast and efficient as well as highly drivable.
I know that based on the experiences from this week the engineers from Audi Sport will quickly come up with a solution while fine-tuning the car. We should keep in mind that we’re still in the very early stages of our testing program.
At the moment, I can only tell you what my driver colleagues and the engineers and technicians from Audi Sport Team Joest are saying. I sat in the cockpit but, as expected, wasn’t able to test because I should not push down the clutch pedal with my injured foot. But I’ve still got 78 days before we start at Le Mans – and from now on without crutches, by the way!"
Yours,
Tom Kristensen
