NEWS // LOLA'S ADAPTABLE INDY CAR CONCEPT

Lola Cars has just released their concept for the 2012 IndyCar. However, following the somewhat radical designs introduced by Delta Wing and Dallara, Lola’s entry into the 2012 IndyCar battle seems almost sedate at first. But considering the new Lola was designed with aerodynamic stability and design adaptability in mind, it seems their concept might best fit the needs of the IRL... [read more]

Lola’s concept features two alternatives which would allow teams to choose which chassis they would run, and in effect introduce more variety into what is otherwise a spec-racing series.

Both iterations of the new Lola have been designed to reduce turbulence in their wake, allowing for more drafting and in theory, more passing. The reduction of turbulence is something the IRL deems important, especially on the high-speed ovals that the IndyCar Series visits each year.

Another feature of the new Lola chassis is its adaptability between series. If chosen, the new Lola chassis would be used in the IndyCar Series, but could also be modified, with little effort, and used in the Indy Lights series as well. This would allow teams (and drivers) to move up the ladder with but a few simple changes to their existing chassis.

Obviously not as radical as the Delta WIng concept introduced earlier this month, Lola's 2012 IndyCar design is, in our opinion, a step in the right direction, although we are still proponents of a multi chassis series.

  1. Multi-chassis series isn't going to happen here. If they just have two chassis, one always proves better than the other, and all the teams will end up on the same chassis after a year or two. Unless teams are forced to make their own chassis, nothing will change. Just look at Grand Am. The Riley has been virtually unbeatable for the last 3 years and if every team could get them, they would.
