CTSCC // EMCO GEARS CLASSIC @ MID-OHIO

ColdTrackDays correspondent, Curtis Creager, was at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course last weekend for the seventh round of the 2010 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC), the Emco Gears Classic. Collecting the win in the Grand Sport (GS) class was the TRG Porsche 997 of Bertheau and Pumpelly, while the Magnus Racing Porsche Cayman of Keen and Potter finished second. In the Street Tuner (ST) class it was the BimmerWorld GearWrench BMW 328i of Heumann and Thomas that crossed the line first, followed shortly thereafter by Hurley and Stadtlander in the APR Motorsport Volkswagen GTI.

GUEST BLOG // BRIAN BENTHIN ON SPEC MIATA

Yep, I was that kid; the one that obsessed over his Hot Wheels. The one that at thirteen years old, would wash his dad’s cars purely for the opportunity to move them around the driveway. Actually, I’m still that kid. I just obsess over bigger, heavier cars now.

Fast forward almost 20 years and a friend who’s Ford dealership was sponsoring an open track day at Pacific Raceways asks me if I want in. I had no idea the path down which an innocent, “sure, why not?” was about to send me. Next thing I knew, I was attending race-driver schools, working corners and crewing for friends at club races. I was hooked. Again, I wanted in. I wanted to race... [read more]

While crewing and working corners for sprint races and enduros, I became more familiar with the different racing classes that are popular in my region. I quickly zeroed in on Spec Miata. It’s a great class, the nature of the cars force a focus on driver skill and there are lots of folks to race with. I won’t go too deep into describing the class or car itself, plenty of people have said it better on the Internet already. I will say that Miatas are fairly simple cars, rear-wheel drive, easy to work on, relatively cheap to operate and have amazing support through Mazdaspeed, making them an attractive option for a novice racer.

Enter TC Motorsports. I met Carlo and Jon on a sunny afternoon at their shop. I had my then four-year-old son Nathan in tow, out for a ride in our ‘65 Fastback. I’d seen them at the track, knew of the top-shelf service and fabrication they offered and that they maintained a fleet of rental SM cars and Pro3 BMWs. I stopped by to introduce myself. What I didn’t know was what great people they and the entire team are. Nor did I know that we’d quickly become friends. I’ll never forget how welcoming they were, letting Nate crawl all over their race cars and trailer even though they were trying to pack up for a race in Portland (my boy has the car sickness too, shocking I know).

I chose to build my own car, which in the end is more expensive than buying someone’s completed car. But, our racing budget is limited and slowly chipping away at it was really the only option. This approach is fine; it just takes more time and has the potential to leave you with a car that’s perpetually up on jack stands. It took me about 2 years from purchase of donor car to tech-ready racer. However, thanks to the guidance of Carlo and crew we found creative ways to keep “jack stand-itis” from happening. We segmented stages of the build to align with my budget, like completing just the back half of the cage and spec suspension first which allowed me to take part in track days and driver’s schools. Then when more funds were available, we could finish the cage, other safety items and be off to the races.

May 1, 2010. Jon Ament of TC Motorsports had completed the amazing cage in my car and he, Carlo and Taryn made sure I had everything I needed for my debut in the ICSCC novice-racing program. They even invited me to paddock with them, ensuring my day went smoothly. Finally, I was off to the races!

Getting my car tech’d and the cage stamped by Tom Olsson, the ICSCC steward was an exciting moment for me. Two years of work, planning and obsessing came together. It was legit. This overgrown kid’s 2285-pound Hot Wheel was officially a “race car”, with the papers to prove it. All that was left was to get out there and race against a bunch of other novices with similar levels of adrenaline in their systems.

Oh shit. Now, I’m nervous.

This wasn’t my first time driving the car. Hell, it wasn’t even my first time around Pacific Raceways. I even had very experienced racers paddocked with me, trying (unsuccessfully, I might ad) to convince me I was ready and would do just fine. But my mind raced, faster than any car at the track that day. What had I gotten myself into? Do I have any idea what I’m doing? Will I remember what the flags mean? When do I have to be at pre-grid? Where’s the driver’s meeting, again? How the %&#$ does this HANS work? Should I have slugged an entire bottle of Gatorade? What exactly is IN Gatorade anyway and why does it look like Windex? Did I mention being nervous?

Then I got in the car.

Jon helped me strap in for my first practice session of the day. Somehow, the butterflies went back to the hell from whence they came. I don’t know if Nomex possesses Zen-like qualities, or if clipping in a window net completes some freaky-race-car Feng Shui or what. All I know is, suddenly there was me, the car and nothing else. No nerves, no jitters, and no self doubt. The car was great, it felt good and so did I. Racing fender-to-fender came more natural than I anticipated. I was consistent and steadily improved my lap times throughout practice and qualifying. I ended up posting my fasted lap of the day during the race! I drove heads up and clean. I loved mixing it up with my fellow novice racers, we all did extremely well. When a couple folks did have an off, they reacted correctly and were predictable. I even shook my tail feathers a little exiting Turn 8 during practice. But I regained control, didn’t collect anyone and most important had FUN!

I can’t wait for my next race!

I can’t say enough about Conference (ICSCC), IRDC, it’s volunteers and members or all the amazing people connected to club racing here in the Pacific Northwest. To all you folks that make it happen, thank you. Thank you Carlo, Taryn and Jon of TC Motorsports for all your help and encouragement. I’d also like to thank a few folks in the Spec Miata community that helped me a bunch along the way; Pat Newton, Greg Bush, Jim Boemler and Antonio Garza. Finally and most importantly, a big thanks to my wife Shannon and my kids Nathan and Ava for being so understanding and supportive through all of this, you’re the best!

If you’ve ever considered getting involved with this hobby or sport or whatever you want to call it, do it! Your inner child will thank you.

Brian Benthin

I apologize for not reporting on Round #3, but there wasn’t a whole lot to report. My co-driver Rick Edwards got in one lap of green flag racing at Barber Motorsports Park, before being involved in an accordion-style pileup on the races first restart. Someone up the grid tapped their brakes, and (like what happens on the road) people start getting closer and closer, and in some cases, collect one another. So, our race was over before it began.

With generous support from Ford Racing, the TC Motorsports crew repaired our #14 Mustang Boss 302R, and got it ready to go just two days before we were to be at VIR. I arrived at the track Thursday afternoon to see the guys doing final prep, and applying the last of the ColdTrackDays.com vinyl.

As I said above, this was my first time visiting Virginia International Raceway. I had done a few laps on iRacing.com’s online simulator, but beyond that I had no first-hand experience. My first few laps tell me that this place is awesome! There are slow, technical corners, and there are fast, ballsy corners. It rewards a technical, consistent driver as well as a driver who is not afraid to use every little bit of the car’s potential. My favorite section of track is what’s known as the “Upper Esses,” a set of connecting bends that in our Boss 302R, we enter the first bend at over 135mph! The entry speed makes the following four turns very interesting (and fun)!

Our practice sessions went well; Rick was very diligent at absorbing data to learn the track as quickly as he could. He picked up time every session, and we were slowly creeping up the charts. After Thursday’s testing, the crew put the car on the scales to align it and make sure our weight was in order, only to find that we were 115 lbs. overweight! That could make a small difference in lap time!

I was elected to take the car out for the first official practice session, and put down a lap good enough for 9th overall. I’d say the weight played a role in some of that speed! Rick had a rough qualifying session, as he was balked several times and just couldn’t get his “game face” on. We would start the race from 25th position.

Rick had a great opening stint, and he kept the car in perfect shape. At just under an hour, Rick pitted under a full course caution, and all the way up to 14th place. I jumped in for the remaining hour and a half in 21st position. I had a good restart, gaining one position, and not even one lap later there was a massive incident involving four cars that would lead to a long caution period. My thoughts go to Todd Buras, who reportedly broke several ribs in the crash; I wish him a speedy recovery!

As the pit cycles continued, I found myself in 8th place by the time the race restarted! Two laps beyond that I was in 5th, and sticking right with the leaders! Ladies and Gentlemen, TC Motorsports is for real! As I continued to hang with the leaders, more cars pitted, and I ran in 2nd place for several laps. Part of the way into my stint, the mouthpiece for my drink bottle came off, which left the hose free to dribble all over me whenever it pleased. It was pretty distracting, and I made a few mistakes. About the time the leading car (#15 Multimatic Boss 302R) pitted, I had a huge slide coming onto the front straight and the #6 Sunoco Camaro was all over me. I braked a little too deep going into T1, and slid off the track, losing my short-lived lead and dropping to 6th place. I finally moved the drink bottle tube so it wouldn’t pour all over me, and got back down to business.

Two weeks prior to the event, I had a massive episode of stomach pain, which was determined to be a gallstone attack. Due to this, I was unable to exercise during those two weeks and my endurance was a little lacking. We had one more pit stop to make, and we took fuel and four tires. Looking back, taking tires was a call that could’ve gone 50/50. We would have lost fewer positions in the pits, but our times would not have been as quick. Ultimately, we finished 15th in GS and overall. The team did great, our pit stops were fast and efficient, and Rick and I kept the car clean, dent-free, and competitive. I also turned the 5th fastest lap of the race, which really shows our true potential for strong finishes in the future!

After the race, I was exhausted! The lack of training combined with the heat in the car, the lack of a cool suit and drink bottle, I was hurting! Two days following the event, I had my offending gallbladder removed, and am currently recovering from the operation. Needless to say, I am grateful for the month off, during which I hope I will be able to train and regain some strength for Lime Rock!

Thanks for reading!

RACE RESULTS // CTSCC - BOSCH 200 @ VIR (W/VIDEO)

Also racing last weekend at Virginia International Raceway was the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge who held their fourth round of competition, the Bosch Engineering VIR 200. Amongst those racing in the CTSCC's Grand Sport class was Northwest native Joey Atterbury. At the wheel of the #6.2 Mitchum Motorsports Camaro GS.R, Atterbury started from 19th but quickly made his way through the field. Then, with only a handful of laps remaining, Atterbury suffered a gearbox failure, forcing him to retire early.

Also racing in the GS class was Ted Anthony Jr. in the #14 TC Motorsports x ColdTrackDays Mustang Boss 302R. Ted's teammate, Rick Edwards, who qualified 25th, took the car all the way to 14th before handing it over to Anthony. Driving from 14th, Ted managed to take the car all the way to P1 before having to pit for fuel. He would go on to finish 15th overall.

RACE RESULTS // CTSCC - BARBER 200 (W/VIDEO)

Last weekends Barber 200, the third round of the heavily contested GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC), took place at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. Amongst those competing last weekend were fellow Northwest natives, Ted Anthony Jr. and Joey Atterbury. At the wheel of the TC Motorsports x ColdTrackDays Mustang Boss 302R, Anthony and teammate Rick Edwards only managed to finish one green flag lap before being sandwiched between two other cars, ending their day prematurely. Atterbury, who shares driving duties in the #6.2 Mitchum Motorsports Camaro GS.R with fellow VW TDI Cup alumni, Devin Cates, started the race from 27th and would go on to finish the day 10th overall.

CTSCC BARBER 200 // QUALIFYING RESULTS

Qualifying for this weekends Barber 200, the third round of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, took place yesterday at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. After a hard fought battle in the Grand Sport class, the Multimatic Motorsports Mustang Boss 302R of Foster and Maxwell took pole, some 0.128 seconds faster than the Roush Performance Ford Mustang GT of Roush Jr. and Johnson. Starting from third will be the JBS Motorsports Mustang Boss 302R of Gue and Seafuse.

After a strong result in Friday's test session, the TC Motorsports/ColdTrackDays Mustang Boss 302R of Rick Edwards and Ted Anthony Jr. will start todays race in 17th, following their best qualifying session to date. Fellow Northwest native, Joey Atterbury, finished qualifying 2.885 seconds off the pace of Foster and Maxwell and will start from 27th in the Mitchum Motorsports Camaro GS.R.

In the Street Tuner class it was the BimmerWorld/GearWrench BMW 328i of Clay and White that managed to finish the day atop the time sheets. A mere 0.24 seconds off the pace of Clay and White was the Freedom Autosport Mazda Speed 3 of Foss and Pobst, who will start today's race from P2. Rounding out the top three was Halpin and Sweeney in the APR Motorsport Volkswagen GTI, who finished the day 0.363 seconds behind Foss and Pobst.
