MODERN DAY HEROES // ALAIN CASTERLLANA'S NORMA M20

In these days of 500m asphalt run-off areas, constant radius turns, fifteen layer tyre barriers and the like, we here at ColdTrackDays thought that the 21st century motorsport enthusiast should not be without the few men and machines that still send a tingle down your spine just as back in the 'Golden Age' of the sport. Part One begins with the sport of "Hillclimbing" which in Europe can be quite a fearsome and at the same time interesting beast. Watch as Alain Castellana (above) in his Castellana Racing Norma M20 powered by a BMW 3.0l M3 powerplant (below) tackles a stretch of the Gemenos Hillclimb, France in 2005.

For those CTD readers wanting more after sampling the delights of this sport, a search on YouTube with the words F3000 and Bergrennen Hillclimb would be most recommended.

  2. I have been a fan of European Hillclimb for a while now. Alain Castellana is just one of many men who battle the Hillclimb in some incredible equipment!

For free onboard video's, have a look here: http://www.objectifvideo.com/vids/video/videos_an.php?Cat=2&Para=2009

To buy DVD's containing some amazing footage (as well as see previews of alot of them), this is the place to go: http://www.videoconcept.com/magasin/index.php

A few years ago i was very happy to receive a package from France containing 13 DVS's, i think it was AUD$450 worth at the time, but my goodness it was worth it!

Another few names to look out for is Franz Tscharger in his Osella PA20S, Lionel Regal in his F3000 Reynard Mugen (mentioned above), Georg Plasa in his incredible BMW 3 Series (with Judd V8!) and wait until you hear the Mercedes Evo 2 of Norbert Brenner! The sound is fantastic :)

AH Video Concept has released complete DVD's for some of these guys (Tscharger, Plasa has 2 DVD's, Regal has 2 also now i believe). In the case of Georg Plasa's you get to see all of his other cars that led to the monster he drives today. Really well made DVD's!

You see all sorts on the hillclimb, from Groupe B Lancia's right down to 1980's VW Golf's. Every single car is built by very passionate people, you can see that straight away :)
