KEEPING AN OPEN MIND // FORMULA CARS @ PORTLAND

While many of us spent last weekend at Pacific Raceways for the 21st annual SOVREN Pacific Northwest Historics, Camden Thrasher decided to split his weekend between there and the Portland International Raceway, where the second National SCCA event of the year was taking place. Amongst the wide range of cars in attendance, a somewhat robust field of Formula cars took to the track last weekend, to include Formula Mazda's, Atlantic's and the growing F1000 class. The Formula Atlantic class, while loosing ground against the emerging F1000 class, is still one of my favorites. Powered by Toyota four cylinders and featuring added aero benefits, the FA class would certainly be a fun class to race in, assuming you can afford it of course...

From behind you can get an idea of just how much heat is being displaced by these Formula cars.

Yet another Formula Atlantic at speed. Having been produced for an extended period of time, the FA class can consist of some rather old cars, or more modern versions like the one above.

Formula Enterprise is another growing class in the SCCA. What was once Formula SCCA has since been renamed, and although the rules changed slightly, it is still a (relatively) affordable way to race open wheel cars.

One of my favorite classes, the older Formula Mazda's make great weekend race cars. Safe, affordable and certainly fun.
