The most common stereotype when it comes to motorsport is that it is a male dominated industry, whenever there is the typical stereotype there is always a minority who share the same, if not a greater passion for the subject matter. So when Sydney based track day organises, Circuit Club, chucked the idea of an All Girls Track day, at recently finished Marulin Driver Training Centre, around the discussion table. I instantly knew it was going to be a good idea but deep down I really didn’t know what to expect... [read more]
The day was structured a little differently to the average track day, it had more of a driver training approach. Upon arrival all the girls were directed inside to get some expert tuition from an ex highway patrol police driver trainer where he discussed the concept of driving, from understeer to oversteer, hazard precaution and the best way for braking. It was actually quite interesting that all the girls partners said in the room and where listening intently to the good advice that was being offered up. Once completed the girls were split into groups to attack the track and it was quite clear to see first timers to the track and the girls who really knew what they were doing.
The fastest car on the days was this LHD black EVO 9 that was recently brought in from the USA. The car has been fully decked out and setup for tarmac rallying. This car is normally driven in the Dutton Rally Series by a very well know aussie driver trainer.
Another tarmac rally car was this Nissan Pulsar GTiR, driven by Samantha Stevens, a female motoring journalist and rally navigator in Australia, who was giving the black Evo a real run for its money.
This yellow Evo 9 finished of the group of three who were having a great time and putting on an even better show sharing a very close 3 way battle throughout each session.
EVO’s were the car of choice for the faster girls, with this nicely modified EVO 7 bringing up the rear of the fastest group.
The brain child of this event, Jayne, was loving every minute of the day in here 180sx type X. Jayne has envisioned this style of even for a very long time and thanks to her it has all come together.
Another one of the girls was Kylie Willmington who is related to circuit owner Gary, she was driving here NA Nissan Pulsar track car, that was sporting quite abit of battle damage from her recent racing adventures.
Although there were some very experienced drivers there were also the first timers, who have been thinking about going to the track for a long time but have always been too intimidated to actually enter. This is why I hope this event expands in the future. Everyone should get to experience the sensations of driving around a race track.
Honda's seemed to be the popular choice of cars for the first timers with a very rare EP3 Civic type R
And a very nice DC2 Integra Type R
MTDC were also kind enough to loan out there MX5 race cars to the driver trainers on the day to take spectators and the participants around the circuit for hot laps. To see what a professional could do on the tight circuit.
Although the turnout was a little less than expected, I hope this can be used as a catalyst for mores days like this in the future as it was truly amazing to witness and it just had such a different vibe to the “average track day”
