2009 GERMAN GRAND PRIX // QUALIFYING RESULTS

After three rounds of knock out qualifying, the grid is set for the 2009 German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. Much to our surprise however, it was not the BGP001 of Jenson Button, nor the RB5 of Sebastian Vettel that finished the day atop the leader board. Current points leader Jenson Button looked strong heading into this mornings qualifying, however issues with achieving appropriate tire temperature would cause the British driver to finish the day in third, just behind Brawn teammate Rubens Barrichello.

While a P8 finish would normally be considered somewhat of a disaster for the gentlemen from Maranello, Felipe Massa's performance this morning was one of the better we have seen from the young Brazilian all year. Both he and Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen not only made it into Q3, but managed to finish the day in P8 and P9 respectively.

The real surprise, as far as I am concerned, was the P5 finish of current Formula One World Champion, Lewis Hamilton. The first time both of the McLaren's have made it passed Q2 this year, Hamilton put his MP4-24 ahead of both the Brawn and Red Bull teams during the final minutes of Q3, however he was quickly demoted as Barricehllo, Button, Webber and Vettel made their final passes. That said, Hamilton's P5 finish is certainly something to be proud of in a season that many have considered to be all but over with.

While many expected the young German to take pole at his home Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel finished the day 0.127 seconds behind Red Bull teammate Mark Webber, leaving him in P2 come tomorrows race.

In what was to be the first pole position of his career, Red Bull driver Mark Webber narrowly defeated teammate Sebastian Vettel in the final moments of Q3. Webber will start tomorrows German Grand Prix with a pair of Brawn GP's lined up behind him, followed shortly thereafter by the eager Sebastian Vettel and current Formula One World Champion, Lewis Hamilton...
