The man behind the wheel, both figuratively and literally, has taken a step down. John Heinricy, General Motor’s Performance Division chief, announced his retirement today. Heinricy started his career with GM nearly 40 years ago, and has since had his hand in a number of successful projects. The Citation X11, the original Cadillac CTS as well as the CTS-V variant, the Corvette Z06 and the Cobalt SS are but a few. Heinricy is also responsible for 11 SCCA Runoff victories (many in the T1 class), with his most recent coming behind the wheel of a Showroom Stock Class (SSC) Cobalt SS. Though an official member of General Motor’s staff, the boys at Cadillac consider him one of their own, especially after Heinricy took the wheel of the Cadillac powered, Team Cadillac CTS, in the Speed World Challenge GT. Heinricy also holds the record setting laptime of 7:59.32 at the Nurburgring in a Cadillac CTS-V. Having taken what many considered to be a dying brand and moving them into the twenty-first century as a leading force amongst domestic automobiles, Heinricy’s job is certainly done // 11.07.2008
