Qualifying for the first race in the FIA GT1 World Championship was suspended following an accident at the Yas Marina Circuit. Heading into turn 8, Swiss racing driver Natacha Gachnang lost control of the Matech Competition Ford GT and went down the escape road, hitting the safety barriers. Gachnang was conscious when safety crews reached her. Treated by the FIA Medical Delegate, and local medical staff, for a broken leg, Gachnang was then airlifted to Sheik Khalifa hospital in Abu Dhabi for further tests.
Following the accident, the FIA Race Director decided to end the qualifying session due to the amount of work required to reinstate the safety equipment. In consequence the final positions of the first qualifying session will determine the starting grid for tomorrow's qualifying race.
