EVENT // GT3 & GT4 ASIA CUP TEST @ SEPANG

Ahead of the season opener on May 16th, participants in the GT3 Asia and the GT4 Asia Cup showed up at the Sepang International Circuit for a joint preliminary test session last weekend. Twenty-six drivers took part in the two-day test, flying in from as far away as Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Australia... [read more]

"This test session is for the drivers who are new to the series or are joining us this season with new cars. The session mainly acts as a shakedown before the start of the season. It also gives everyone a chance to catch up with one another after a long break in between seasons" said David Sonenscher, Motorsport Asia CEO.

The test session began under wet conditions on Saturday, however this did not deter any of the drivers, all of whom were eager to get back on track following the long off season.

Amongst those participating in last weekends test was 2009 GT3 Asia Champion, Tunku Hammam. At the wheel of his Porsche 997 GT3 Cup S, Hammam noted that his car was a bit slower due to engine troubles and said that they will be sending the car to be checked following the test.

SPS Racing invited Japanese driver and former Porsche Carrera Cup Asia competitor, Keita Sawa, to be their private driver coach for the weekend. SPS, who turned up with five Lamborghinis, has employed brothers Siu Tit Lung and Siu Yuk Lung, Sasha Chu, Billy Fung and Choi to drive their fleet of Italian supercars.

Choi, who is making his return to the GT3 Asia Cup, drove the new Lamborghini LP 560 GT3 for Team SPS Racing, and was able to set the fastest time of the weekend.

After a two year absence, Team IMSS will return to Asia Cup competition and could be seen testing a trio of Ferrari F-430's with Byron Tong, Oliver Lee and Andrew Luk doing the driving. Luk claimed the fastest time on a damp track when he clocked a 2:17.221 lap of the Sepang Circuit in the first session of the weekend.

Team Craf turned out for last weekends test with a brand new Ginetta G50 GT3, an Aston Martin DBRS9 and a Fiat Abarth 500. The team, who is working with Eurasia Motorsport, will be joining the series this year with three Ginettas, driven by Frank Yu, Eric Cheung and Samson Chan.

The GT3 Asia and GT4 Asia Cup will visit a total of seven different circuits this year, including three circuits in Japan and the Macau street circuit for an invitational race at the end of the season.

The season will kick off on May 14th-16th with the Asian Festival Of Speed at the Sepang International Circuit and will also return as a support event for the AUTOBACS Super GT Series in June.
