HISTORY // THE PORSCHE 911 GT1 STRASSENVERSION

Porsche unveiled the 911 GT1 in 1997, announcing it would compete in the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans. Despite the 911 moniker, Porsche’s new supercar actually had little in common with the 911, with its floorpan being sourced from the 956/962 Group C car... [read more]

Featuring a mid-mounted, water-cooled, twin turbocharged, four valve per cylinder, flat six, the 911 GT1 made roughly 700hp and was considerably more powerful than Porsche’s other supercar, the (993) 911 GT2.

In order to homologate the chassis for GT1 competiton, Porsche had to produce 25 road going versions of their new 911 GT1. Dubbed the 911 GT1 Strassenversion, Porsche released their new street car in early 1996 to the German government for compliance testing. Although the engine was slightly de-tuned, the 600hp and 2,425 lb curb weight proved a potent combination, with 0-60 mph times right around 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 235 mph.

I am not entirely sure this is an authentic 911 GT1, as the taillight assembly and exhaust look a bit off, but I figured no one would complain if I posted the picture ;)

  1. Wow... the car looks absolutely stunning in red! I've always associated the color silver with this car, but hand me the keys to that red one, and I would not complain!

And yes, the car in the bottom photo is clearly a fake!
