Shortly after Toyota president Akio Toyoda announced the withdrawl of the Japanese automaker from the Formula One World Championship, Mr.Toyoda went on to assure enthusiasts of the companies continued commitment to motorsport, albeit in relation to a rather uncertain economic climate:
“Motor sports remain an important means of personalizing the automobile in the eyes of customers. Motor sports also remain an important means of cultivating human resources and our R&D operations... We will rethink our motor-sports activities with an eye to maximizing those benefits while addressing economic realities.”
Although the company will no longer compete in Formula One, Toyota will continue to compete in a handful of motorsport competitons to include Formula Nippon, NHRA, Grand Am, Super GT and NASCAR.
