A few weeks back we posted a build thread featuring a rather unique Porsche 356. At the time the car appeared to be nearly complete, with a finished interior, rebuilt powerplant and custom sheet metal. However, taking into consideration the nature of a build, we were a bit uncertain as to whether the car was, or would ever be, finished. You know how these things go. However, after further investigation we managed to sort out the details on this particular car and can now complete the picture.

The story of Fred Veitch's Porsche 356 begins nearly six years ago, when a friend gifted he and his wife a Pre-A shell for their 25th wedding anniversary. Originally purchased in 1986 as a parts car for a 1954 Speedster restoration, the shell had sat for 16 years before it was given to Mr.Veitch. Inspired by other 'Outlaw' Porsche builds complete by Gary and Rod Emory, Fred knew exactly what to do with his newly acquired bathtub and soon went to work upgrading the 356.
Powered by a turbocharged 2110cc Volkswagen race motor, Fred's 356 utilizes a dry sump oil system and a 15 quart oil tank, both of which aid in cooling the turbocharged powerplant. Having moved the firewall forward in order to accommodate the larger oil tank, the backseats were removed and have since been replaced by a carpeted engine management box. A new nose cone and carriage assembly were also installed in order to house the Volkswagen racing transmission. Moving inside, Fred had a custom set of bucket seats made (which are wrapped in waxed brown bomber jacket leather), and go quite well with the 1950's accurate square weave carpet and wool headliner.
Finishing the interior, Fred installed dual master cylinders with adjustable bias and a set of custom racing pedals (spaced apart to 996 spec) which are mated to a hydraulic clutch. On the outside, the 356 features a fiberglass front hood and a louvered aluminum rear decklid. The exhaust and aluminum gas tank are custom, as is the roll cage. For the suspension Fred installed a set of boxed front arms, custom sway bars and custom rear torsion bars. Additional bits include roof mounted wipers, wheels drilled to look like the early Glockler race cars, a custom Azure paint job, titanium bumpers and countless other things.
With 200bhp and a dry weight of only 1680lbs, Fred's 356 'Outlaw' is, in my opinion, one of the most impressive builds I have ever seen. A car that has taken him nearly six years to complete, I am sure he is wholly satisfied with the time and money invested every time gets behind the wheel!
