NEWS // NIGEL MANSELL TESTING FORMULA RENAULT?

Last weekend, open-wheel racing legend Nigel Mansell was invited to drive the Formula Renault 3.5 of his son Greg Mansell, ahead of Sunday’s World Series by Renault race at the Silverstone Circuit. A track where Mansell scored some of his most memorable wins, Nigel got behind the wheel of the WSR Formula Renault and proceeded to run a few hot laps around the famed Silverstone Circuit.

Having won the 1992 Formula One World Championship in a Renault powered Williams, and having also won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone that same year (as well as in 1991 and 1987), Mansell seemed right at home in the 2.0L Formula Renault, ending the day only six seconds off the pace of the current points leader... Here is what Mansell had to say after his test session:

"My memories whenever I go down Hangar Straight are of the days in qualifying with 1000bhp, so you always want a bit more power. I gave myself a bit of a fright today when I went to hit the brakes for Becketts, I moved my right foot across and ended up hitting the accelerator. I managed to slow the car down in time as I wasn’t going flat-out, after that the left-foot braking took a bit of getting used to."

  1. Beautiful car. I really like the latest generation GP2, A1GP, Formula Renault, etc. formula cars.

    Six seconds off the pace though? You're going to have to be a bit faster than that Nigel! ;)
