In what has to be one of the most interesting Formula One races in recent history, current World Champion Lewis Hamilton took his first win of the 2009 season, while Jenson Button and the Brawn GP team struggled to maintain the massive points lead they accumulated early in the season. Additionally, Fernando Alonso's triumphant P1 finish in Saturday's qualifying was all but wasted, when a pit-stop error took the Renault out of the race, as well as the next round of the championship... Off the line, Fernando Alonso was able to retain the lead he had worked so hard for on Saturday, however the KERS powered cars of Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen powered ahead, each moving up a number of grid positions.
Heading into turn two, Kimi Raikkonen managed to squeeze the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel to the outside, claiming the P4 position while simultaneously damaging Vettel's RB5.
While fighting for the lead with current World Champion Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso came into the pits for what should have been a routine tire change. But when the front right wheel didn't attach properly and the Renault was sent back on track, it took but two turns before the wheel fairing had blown free. Shortly thereafter the front wheel detached completely, forcing Alonso to limp back to pit lane. Additionally, after further investigation by the FIA, Renualt was penalized for their actions and will not be allowed to participate in the next round of the championship at Valencia.
Williams driver Nico Rosberg moved into P4 late in the race, taking the position from McLaren-Mercedes driver Heikki Kovalainen. While he could not catch Mark Webber in the Renault powered RB5, his fourth place finish is well deserved considering he struggled to find speed early in the season.
Having avoided any damage during the contact with Sebastian Vettel early in the race, Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen was able to retain his P2 position, brining Ferrari a much needed bit of success following Massa's tragic accident on Saturday.
Hamilton was able to maintain his lead through the first round of pit-stops and from there it was smooth sailing. While the rest of the field jockeyed for position behind them, Hamilton and Raikkonen continued to increase their lead, crossing the finish line one after the other.
In what was a well fought battle, Lewis Hamilton collected his first win of 2009, doubling his points to 19 and moving the McLaren-Mercedes driver into eighth place overall.
