The supercharged 3.0-liter V12 that powered the Auto Union Type D during the late nineteen thirties, was the last twelve cylinder engine used by Audi until their R10 TDI was introduced in 2006. Making upwards of 500bhp, the Auto Union Type D successfully competed in the 1938 and 1939 European Grand Prix Championship with Tazio Nuvolari and Hans Stuck at the wheel.
With a storied history, this particular Type D, chassis #19, will be up for auction at Bonhams & Butterfields on August 14th in Carmel, California. Driven by Hans Stuck on the Nurburgring and at Reims, the Type D is expected to fetch upwards of $8,000,000 // [comment]
