The VW Motorsport team played it safe this afternoon, with both de Villiers and Miller stopping early in the stage so that teammate Dieter Depping could catch up and the VW Motorsport team could cross the finish line three abreast. This allowed the Mitsubishi Lancer of Joan Roma to take his first (and only) stage win of the 2009 Dakar Rally and gave the American Robbie Gordon (though suffering from throttle issues) a comfortable lead in third.
