Honda’s engine contract with Indy is nearing it’s end and with that comes opportunity. Discussions have begun as to whom may take up the contract, and among those of interest is Alfa Romeo. Looking to get a foothold in the North American market, Alfa, with their 8C Competizione being released this year, see Indy as just that opportunity. Now Alfa Romeo is no stranger to Indianapolis, having participated during the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s in a project they adopted from Ferrari. But despite a long history of motor racing, Alfa Romeo is not currently involved in any major racing series, and has not been since the N.Technology team campaigned a 156 Super Turismo in the WTCC. So, what would a contract with Indy entail? Well, if things continue as they have, the development of the 3.5-liter V8’s currently sanctioned for Indy, would most likely be in the hads of Paolo Martinelli, head of Fiat Powertrain Technologies. Nothing is set in stone, and considering the IRL is not only discussing a continuation of Honda’s contract, but potential development programs with Audi and Porsche as well, Alfisti's out there can only hope.
