The differences can be astounding. Where we are bound by the laws of the road and the ever present traffic cameras, living in a repressive car culture, inevitably doomed to have us all driving mid-level, fuel efficient sedans, the Japaneses on the other hand, have a very different approach. Japan is very much the Vegas of car culture, second only to the German Autobahns, where horsepower is not repressed, and aggressive driving, touge runs and drifting are looked at as art forms, not as disruptive social behaviors. Where we prefer heads up drag races on closed race tracks with an abundance of safety equipment, the Japanese prefer to pit two automobiles against one another, on public roads, lined with trees. Different? yes. Dangerous? sure. Would we have a go? No doubt // 10.20.2008
