The Goodwood Festival of Speed incorporates more than an auto show and hill climb, rally and huge sculptures, it also includes an auction. And at this auction, on the block, was a 1955 Jaguar D-Type, once owned by Nigel Moores. The winning bidder, an apparent car collector and someone with a few extra dollars, took home the Jag for an astonishing price of $4.4 million (USD). With the original 3.4 liter engine and a well sorted service history, the D-Type was sure to fetch a reasonable price at auction, though we are sure no one thought it would reach the four and a half million that it did. Oh, did we mention that it was the first D-Type to roll off the line in '55, and that it lost a close race against a Ferrari 121LM at Eagle Mountain, Texas, a Ferrari piloted by none other than Carroll Shelby. Yeah, that might have helped bring a few extra dollars as well. That, and having been called "one of the most original D-Types in existence" by the auction house, Bonhams.
