Media Ride? // Thor's 1966 GTA

Media ride. That's what they call a freeloader, strapped in tight, lapping the track in a vintage piece of automotive racing history. That freeloader is me. The SOVREN Historic Races have arrived, with Friday seeing the first qualifying rounds and Saturday and Sunday seeing the first races. ColdTrackDays was invited out for a press event this afternoon, and with it came the opportunity to ride in Thor Johnson’s 1966 Alfa Romeo GTA. Powered by 1600cc’s of pure fury, the Alfa Romeo screamed onto the track with me in tow. The ‘A’ in GTA, stands for aluminum, and this GTV variant has an all aluminum shell and enough horsepower to keep you firmly planted in the back of your seat. Having owned the car for only a short time, Thor was kind enough to take me for a few hot laps, showing me that once the tires heated up, the Alfa was capable of things that I had only been able to imagine. And a few laps is all it took , the true capability and sheer agility of this little Italian sport coupe became quickly apparent. King 5 News was there to cover the event as well, allowing their reporter the opportunity for a ride in a vintage racer. Though I think she came back a bit more frazzled than I. The ColdTrack Days staff is thoroughly entrenched in the Alfa Romeo community, and it was a pleasure to experience the GTA in it’s most pure form. Check out the photo gallery for additional pictures from my ride. Thank you Thor for the ride, and stay tuned to ColdTrackDays for additional ‘Local Rides’ and seat of your pants ride alongs, via the ColdTrackDays freeloader and his press credentials! // 07.02.2008
