Enviro Sports Car Series // Saving Some Green

The Enviro Sports Car Series is everything we should have been doing ten years ago. The first racing series to be founded on the premise of using energy efficient vehicles, co-driven by professionals and celebrities, in a pan-European championship. With manufacturer backed teams, the cars must meet a few basic stipulations, a 'wheel to wheel' carbon footprint of no more than 120g/km of CO2, as well as being a capable sports cars, are the two main ingredients. Loosely based around FIA GT3 European Championship standards, the cars (and drivers) will be pitted against one another in a series of competitions. Drag racing, road circuit races and long-distance enduro's are on the schedule, with the championship series beginning as soon as 2010. A field of 12 cars, with each manufacturer allowed two vehicles, the numbers seem small, though organizers are looking to beef things up. With the success of both Audi and Peugeot's diesel Le Mans prototypes, alternative fuels are no longer absent from the motorsports world. For a small taste of things to come, head out to the Mazda Grand Prix of Portland and check out the clean-diesel Jetta TDI Cup, should be good clean fun // 07.22.2008
