WTCC // SEAT & BMW TAKE VICTORIES @ ZOLDER

The FIA World Touring Car Championship made its first ever visit to the Belgium circuit of Zolder this weekend. In front of a raceday crowd of over twenty thousand the two race wins were shared between Seat and BMW. Race one saw current champion Gabriele Tarquini take victory after Sunred Sport Seat team-mate Jordi Gene was excluded for a technical infringement post race. The air restrictor on the Spaniard’s TDI Leon was found to not comply with the regulations thus robbing him of his first victory since Mexico 2008. Completing the podium were the RML Chevrolet's of Yvan Muller and Alain Menu... [read more]

Guernsey's Andy Priaulx made it three wins for the season in the reverse grid race two after fending off the chasing Chevrolet Cruze of Rob Huff and SR-Sport's Tiago Monteiro.

The multiple former champion felt at home at the former F1 circuit but explained that BMW are somewhat struggling for pace over a single lap, "“It was really nice to see so many spectators supporting our team so it felt like a home race for me. It was a similar atmosphere to being at Brands Hatch. Race 1 was much more exciting as after qualifying it was going to be a hard race. I kept attacking Coronel and getting through really was crucial to winning Race 2. I’d love to be able to win Race 1 as well but we just don’t have the pace in qualifying so Race 2 is our only chance of victory at the moment.”

Chevrolet retain their lead in the manufacturers championship while Frenchman and 2008 champion Muller still leads the drivers standings from Tarquini and Priaulx.

NEWS // NICOLAS PROST DRIVES RENAULT F1 CAR

Nicolas Prost, son of four time Formula One world champion and former Renault F1 driver, Alain Prost, was invited to Magny-Cours this past weekend and allowed to drive Renault's 2009 F1 entry, the R29. The car wore the team’s 2010 color scheme which is in many ways similar to the design used when his father drove for Renault in the early nineteen eighties... [read more]

Alain Prost drove for Renault from 1981 to 1983, winning nine Grand Prix and finishing second overall in the championship in his final season with the team. Prost left the team after the 1983 season, frustrated that the French automaker would not develop their turbocharged powerplant further.

Nicolas Prost won the European Formula 3000 championship two years ago and now races in the Le Mans Series. Prost, along with Renault Development Driver Ho-Pin Tung and Mikhail Aleshin, were allowed to drive Renault's 2009 spec car as part of a demonstration put on by the French automaker over the weekend.

WTCC // TARQUINI BEATS RAIN TO ZOLDER POLE

Current FIA World Touring Car Champion Gabriele Tarquini took pole position at Zolder today for round of the 2010 series. The amiable Italian recovered from an engine destroying trip through Zolder's 2nd chicane in free practice to claim the top spot for tommorow's first race ahead of team-mate of Jordi Gene. In a qualifying session that was dominated by changeable weather conditions Tarquini stole a march on his rivals, completing his hot lap in Q2 shortly before the circuit was hit by rain... [read more]

“The cold conditions were good for us" commented the Italian. It was good to get a lap at the start of Q2 and fortunately we chose to put new tyres on for our first run and it paid off. My second practice session was cut short as I tried to fly at the second chicane!

The Sunred Seat driver went on to add "I destroyed the flat bottom and the engine was leaking oil. We changed the engine as we had no penalty due to using it for the last three events, so to come out with a pole has been a lucky day for us.”

Two Chevrolet's will occupy the second row of the grid with Switzerland's Alain Menu just edging out 2008 champion Yvan Muller.

TURNING LEFT & RIGHT // TOYOTA SAVE MART 350 PREVIEW

In the past, we have tended to stay away from the world of NASCAR, but considering that ColdTrackDays is dedicated to reporting on motorsport news and culture from around the world, it is hard to ignore the most popular form of motorsport in America. There are some that are of the opinion that NASCAR is not “real racing” but I question their reasoning and whether they have even experienced an event in person. What is “real-racing” anyway? Personally I have always wanted to see what a top class NASCAR event is like and what better way to experience this than at the first road race of the 2010 Sprint Cup season... [read more]

The track, Infineon Raceway, has been around since the late sixties and has hosted a round of the top stock car series for a number of years now. Built on the rolling hills in the middle of California’s wine country, the track is constantly twisting and changing elevation. This is a challenging course for even the best GT racer, let alone a heavy stock car designed mainly for turning in a single direction.

On Thursday the teams arrive and get their equipment set up. The trailers are works of art, chrome and flashy colors are the name of the game here.

The NASCAR fan base is incredibly huge. People come from all over the country to support their favorite drivers such as Tony Stewart.

…and of course, Ricky Bobby.

The setting sun shines brilliantly over the hillside illuminating the grandstands and pit complex. With the little taste I got today, I’m getting the feeling that this will be quite a show come race day. I can’t wait for what tomorrow will bring when the cars take to the track for practice.

NEWS // VILLENEUVE TO RACE NASCAR @ ROAD AMERICA

Former F1 pilot, Jacques Villeneuve, is looking for a top three finish when the NASCAR Nationwide series visits Road America this weekend. The 1997 Formula One world champion will make his first stock car start of the season in the inaugural NASCAR race on Road America's four-mile road course... [read more]

"I'm not too worried about joining halfway through the season, as it is the first road course this year and the first time ever for NASCAR to be racing at Elkhart Lake," said Villeneuve. "A lot of drivers will be learning the track. We'll be looking for a strong result this weekend hopefully a top three finish if we avoid any issues."

The French-Canadian driver has not raced at Road America since 1995, where he collected his second consecutive victory on his way to the IndyCar title.

"Returning to Road America is very exciting as it remains one of my favourite tracks," he said. "I was hoping to return one day. I have great memories of the circuit as I won both times when I raced there in Indycars. In fact, Road American in '94 was my first win in the series."

Villeneuve, who will be driving for Braun Racing, has raced in the NASCAR Nationwide Series two times prior to this, at Montreal in 2008 and 2009. His best result is a fourth place finish which he collected last year.

GEAR // KINECT CAPABLE FORZA 3 DEMO

The annual Electronics Entertainment Expo is underway in California and Microsoft has just unveiled their new Kinect peripheral for the Xbox 360. In the video featured above, watch as a pair of Turn 10 Studio execs demonstrate what the gaming experience will be like when the upgraded version of Forza hits stores shelves sometime in 2011 // [comment]

PLEDGE DRIVE // JUNE OF 2010

We've decided to try something a little different this month. Prompted by both friends and fans, we've added a 'donate button' to ColdTrackDays, allowing those of you interested in supporting our operation to donate a few dollars. We'd suggest $5 a month, as that's what you'd pay for a magazine, but you're welcome to plug in any figure that fits your budget. We'll run this same post, or something similar, at the half-way point each month, sort of like those pledge drives you hear on public radio ;) Your support is greatly appreciated - J.W. Coffey

GEAR // GRAN TURISMO 5 AVAILABLE NOVEMBER 2ND IN 3D

Well, it's officially official. Sony and Polyphony Digital announced yesterday that their much anticipated Gran Tourismo 5 driving simulator will be available November 2nd, 2010. Adding to an already dizzying array of features (16 player capability, both mechanical and external damage, night and foul weather conditions, and more than 170 cars) GT:5 will also be playable in 3D. That's right, three dimensions. And while the trailer featured above probably isn't an adequate representation of what we can expect when GT:5 invades our living rooms (read: lives), it certainly stokes the fire // [comment]
