During last weekends Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca, photographer Drew Philips captured one of the most depressing moments I have ever seen. One of only 34 250 Testa Rossas built by Ferrari from 1956 through 1961, this particular 1958 250 TR, one of only 21 examples built between 1958-1959 and valued at nearly $8 million dollars, lost control at the top of Laguna Seca's corkscrew, ran full speed through the gravel, collided head long into the tire barrier and then came to rest at the bottom of the two-part turn. Guess not. Went back and looked and PNW Sovern Historics. Shirely's car has a different number. Of course, he could have two.
ReplyDeleteThat's an amazing sequence of shots, and a rather fortunate (but sad) outcome. That car had been in my friend's shop in Campbell back in April to have the left side repaired (but with not as much damage as this time). It does look straight, and I'm glad he's OK. The brakes must have failed...?
