As the green flag waved, the BGP 001 of Rubens Barrichello launched from the starting line to take the second from Kimi Raikkonen. With the option tire mounted to the Brawn GP, Raikkonen, who had been rather fast in both Thursday's practice and Friday's qualifying, struggled to find grip off the line and was unable to regain second.
Button pulled away to an early lead, and with Barrichello running close behind, the pair of Brawn BGP 001's appeared unstoppable on the streets of Monaco.
After an accident took him out of qualifying in the first round, reigning World Champion Lewis Hamilton struggled from the back of the grid, finishing 12th just behind the BMW-Sauber of Nick Heidfeld.
After qualifying a season high second, Kimi Raikkonen struggled to find speed and was unable to regain the position he lost to Barrichello at the start.
Sebastian Vettel looked strong all weekend, until a late race accident took him out f the race.
While Raikkonen never regained second, he did manage to bring his F60 to a season high third place finish, just ahead of Ferrari teammate, Felipe Massa.
